Motorcycle Easy to understand, good points for any fear stress student
This is a good book. I enjoyed reading the material that Bill Kipp covers from start to finish. Keep in mind that it is a book. Just because you read a book about riding a bike doesn't mean your going to have success your first time out. If anything this book is a testimony to continued training in a system like FAST offers. If you are a fan of Gavin de Becker or Tom Taylor you will find this book an interesting read.

Motorcycle Sound ideas, but FALSE ADVERTISING...
...this is really a INFORMATIONAL/PROMOTIONAL book, *NOT* an INSTRUCTIONAL book. As long as you know that, it's not too bad.

However, the book's cover is disingenuously designed to suggest that it is really a "how to" instructional manual, which is a SHAMELESS LIE. The first 1/2 to 2/3rds is a bunch of long-winded anecdotes and arguments trying to convince you of just how practical and necessary Kipp's approach is in real life situations, esp. as compared to traditional martial arts and even traditional self-defense approaches. Well, DUH! Kind of like preaching to the choir, since anyone who didn't already suspect that would never go near a book like this to begin with. The remainder of the book JUST BARELY brushes over specific drills and techniques, with very few photos or diagrams or even detailed descriptions.

In any writing class, you are bound to hear the old axiom, "Show, don't tell." Well this book is all about TELLING...yada yada yada yada, just endless filler, ad nauseum. The author is hell bent to show you as little as possible.

It's painfully obvious that the main purpose of this book is to get you to go take one of Kipp's workshops, so they don't want to give anything away to those of us who simply don't have the time or money to do so. Makes sense from an economic perspective, since book sales are way less profitable than workshops. It's just the sleazy marketing approach which is annoying.

Motorcycle Solid Training Methodology
Bill Kipp provides insight that can only come from first hand experience in adrenalin based training methods. Clearly explains the 'flailing' and / or flight syndrome you often see, why it happens, and how proper training methods can teach you to manage the problem. Challenge is how to translate the knowledge into practice.

Motorcycle You can bet your life on it (literally)
As the founder and senior professor of VITAL Self-Defense, and the co-host of a weekly podcast (The Self-Defense Show), I can tell you from experience that this is a tremendous book. If you are really looking for a self-defense system out there that "gets it"... this is one of the best out there. It cuts right through all the bull and gets to what really helps you in a violent encounter. No fancy pants moves, no athletic skills required. Real options for real people facing real violence. The style of self-defense shown in this book is similar to the Model Mugging and IMPACT programs from which it evolved. Bill Kipp has been a pioneer in these and other programs, and the FASTDefense program is everything he has learned over 20 years polished to a fine shine. It's no wonder that this was voted the best self-defense system of 2006! I've learned many great things from this book (and Bill Kipp's program) and it has really helped me fine tune and craft my self-defense system. Thank you, and please, keep more stuff coming! A+

Motorcycle Superb book by knowledgeable author
There are people that write for a living having first researched a subject. Then there are people that write from first hand perspective, experience and knowledge.
Bill Kipp falls into the latter category. He writes from years of first hand experience of being afraid, of confronting that fear, and producing a first class self-protection training system.
The methodology of scenario based training is well known to be one of the best for training people to handle stressful encounters.

Think about a first aid analogy. If you spend all your time in classes assimilating knowledge, you'll very likely freeze and panic the first time you encounter a real casualty.

The same is true of training for aggressive and violent encounters. Martial arts and self-defence courses are often so technique based that they miss this aspect all together. Many ranking martial artists have been completely out of their depth outside the bar on a friday night.

This book (and the training courses it's based on) will show you how to deal with the inner opponent.
