 The Next Beatles? Nah, But Still Great!
"Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" is the debut album by the Arctic Monkeys, and what a debut it is! The Sheffield lads waste no time in showing that they're a force to be reckoned with, as evidenced by the explosive first track, "The View From the Afternoon". Things get even better when "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" makes its way out of your speakers. The band gives you time to catch your breath at the beginning of "Fake Tales of San Francisco", only for the song to erupt into a wall of guitars at the climax. Next, the excellent "Dancing Shoes" sets the tone for the next two songs, "You Probably Couldn't See For the Lights, But You Were Staring Straight At Me", a short but rockin' number, and "Still Take You Home", which ends the first half of the album on an incredible high.
The second half kicks off with "Riot Van", a tender two-minute ballad about an encounter with the police turning ugly. While not a bad song, it does seem to bog things down just a bit, but it's short enough that you don't have to think much of it, as "Red Lights Indicate Doors Are Secure" quickly puts the album right back on track with more loud guitars and powerful drums. Alex Turner's vocals really shine on this track, as well. Next up to bat is "Mardy Bum", a nice mellow number amidst all the thrashing guitars. Speaking of guitars, you'll find plenty on "Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But...", which features a jam session halfway through reminiscent of early Smashing Pumpkins, only better. After that, you're lured into a false sense of relaxation at the beginning of "When The Sun Goes Down", only for the mellow acoustic guitar sound to be shattered by electric guitars and pounding drums. My personal favorite on the album, "From the Ritz to the Rubble", starts out with an almost spoken tale of trying without success to get into a club, which then moves into a powerful chorus, and eventually to a triumphant climax. The album ends on an excellent note with "A Certain Romance", which starts off loud, only for the drums to fall away to reveal a very melodic bassline accompanied by some plucky guitar, and some of the best lyrics/vocals on the entire album.
If you're a fan of British rock, or just music in general, pick this up, I guarantee any music fan will find something to love on this amazing debut. And if you like this, I suggest "Favourite Worst Nightmare", the bands's second album.
 fun arctic music
A few months ago saw the Artcic Monkeys performing in and old Jools Holland show and thought: hey, this is an interesting band! Then I learned they have been around for a couple of years and about all the hype around them. I am not sorry to have missed that because I am aware of the overestimation the English media do on new bands just for the sake of bussiness. But when managed to listen the whole album, what a pleasant surprise! This is not like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kaiser Chiefs and similar, which are good bands, but not like the AM. If I have to define this cd in one word that would be: FUN. What I liked most is that there is not the pretentiousness that you easily find in bands like Oasis. Artic music is raw, fresh and very rhythmic, makes me to stomp the feet and banging my head when listening every song of this cd, hardly any new band or cd makes me this happy. It is like I have been waiting for this basic, yet smart music for a long time. It is no surprise the monkeys were 20 when they recorded this, you can notice they are unbiased and innocent on the music industry. They are just having fun and at the same time trying to be different, not trying hard to be original. They are not geniuses or virtuosos, but they are a real rock and roll band! The last time I was this enthusiastic with a band was for the White Stripes and just for the innovative "Seven nation army", the song alone was worth buying the whole album. Well "Whatever people say..." has twelve "seven nation army" on it. Fully enjoyable from A to Z.
Great band.
It's not often that i find a CD where i like every song, but when i was introduced to Arctic Monkeys i was hesitant about whether i would like them or not as i figured just another over hyped British band. After a few plays, they started to grow on me and i have been listening to them ever since. I think they have great talent. If you like this you should check out their DVD live at the Apollo. Yes I am, I'm 40! Thank you. I am not new to the AM's but have watched the media hype and listened to the album, and guess what. Its good. Ok, it doesn't brake any musical moulds but what it is, is this. Its a collection of good songs, with intelligent lyrics and played with aplomb and energy. Twenty year old kids (and students) are of course well known for thinking that they know everything but in fact they know nothing at all.
The AM's don't try and sing songs about Faustian themes and Daniel Beddingfield "love me or I'll jump off this bridge" type anthems, but rather songs that would have been just as relevant to me as a "know-nothing student" 20 years ago, because when you are that age, what is important to you is getting laid and partying. I have no idea why someone would want to be a student in a culture where you couldn't drink until you were 21,that would constitute a waste of the entire University experience. Hell, if I had actually had to pay fees to go to University, I would have expected table service during lectures.
These songs address the important issues of songs about how difficult it is to tap off with birds in nightclubs, the logistical and semantic issues regarding attempting to persuade the driver of a late night vehicle licensed for the conveyance of paying members of the public (a taxi) to allow the carriage of 6 members rather than the usual 5, added to which the additional complication of the possession of kebabs causes. If you are British, you will be aware that the food that the Am's are referring to are kebabs as these are the "industry standard" for wandering around with at night when the clubs kick out. And of course we have all tried the changing jumpers and rejoining the back of the line scenario depicted in "From the Ritz to the Rubble" when denied entry by over-zealous door staff.
These lads are not pretending to be the stars of "Dawsons Creek" (if any teens had tried talking and acting like that where I came from, they would have (rightly) received a good kicking) but they merely (and cleverly) are writing about what they know, and performing it with an energy and precision that is refreshing.
In these times where musical dross in manufactured by the shovel full by mediocrity factories like "X-Factor" and "(insert name)s got talent", its not surprising that these lads generated some hype. Fair play to em. Mind you, Britney's on the comeback trail so this might be an example of something some reviewers might prefer to get excited about. Consider my scorn well and truly poured.
Ridiculous-Good
Amazing album, they are a great band...honestly, just buy this, you won't be disappointed, and this is not some fangirl from the UK...(its a fangirl from the US)...but nevertheless, I think everyone will enjoy this music.
