 Only Looks Secure
11/28/08 - Buyer Beware: I had two bicycles stolen (over $1400 value) from my garage when a thief cut through a related product (OnGuard Akita 5080 Bicycle Security Cable) OnGuard Akita 5080 Bicycle Security Cable (Lock Not Included) in one slice. Looks like they used a chain cutter. Unless you're using this as a theft deterrent or for low value items, don't fool yourself that you're buying security.
 Fine Cable -- Horrible packaging
The cable is exactly what I expected -- a sturdy addition to my OnGuard U-Bolt lock. But the box it came in was 18"x18"x6" -- WAY too big for such a small item. 95% of the box was filled with crumpled paper. The cable could have easily fit in a 6"x6"x6" box, or even a large padded envelope. What a waste.
 Makes me feel safer
This is a great little addition to my u-lock. When I've got to leave my bike somewhere sketchy for a while I can easily include my quick-release front wheel in the lock up, or, in the not-so sketchy neighborhoods, I can lock up other bikes without the hassle of having to lock two or more locks. One of the nice features about this particular model is that it wraps nicely around the prongs of my u-lock, making it fast and easy to use it and store it. A warning though: these cables can be cut pretty quickly by any petty thief, so use it with the u-lock.
Best used for the purpose intended...
First of all, the thing to understand about this cable is how it is intended to be used. You can use it as a low-security bike lock with a padlock of your choice. Onguard's web site rates the security of their products and the rating on this one indicates the amount of security it provides. You can also use it in tandem with a u-lock to secure your front wheel to the u-lock and the rest of your bike. In this situation the security provided should be quite good.
Secondly, the quality of this cable is outstanding for what it is. All of the pieces fit together very nicely and the materials used are excellent. This is a far nicer choice than many others out there.
So if you are looking for a decent lock in low-crime areas or if you want something to use with your more protective u-lock this is a great choice. On the other hand, if you think you can use this and some padlock you've got lying around then you are going to be disappointed.
 Cable was cut...
...and bike was stolen less than one month after delivery. I have HALF the cable now.
Good price and attractive product for a LOW security environment.
